Data shows that, due to the issue of world population increase, it leads to “food and water security issues are becoming more critical stressed areas”; thereby causing the pollution, green house effect (GRI, 2015, p.14), for instance, “ China’s hotel growth carries substantial consequences in terms of increases in energy and water consumption, and an expanding carbon footprint” (Noordzy, et. al., 2016, p.3). Hence, it indicates to the protection and management of environmental issues is prime considerations for the travel industry. The urgent issue that resort or hotel industry should focus on is sustainability management. Resort is defined as a full-service lodging facility that offers a range of amenities and recreation facilities that emphasize a leisure experience according to Brey (2011). Resort is significant case that linking to the environmental issue closely as majority of constructions or facilities in resort is associate with environmental background. For example, a large proportion of Golf club in resort need to consider the environmental issues, like Greenland irrigation and water management.
As a starting point, a rough definition towards sustainable management is to “meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (WCED, 1987, p.8). Namely, sustainable management is referred a long-term vision that tries to satisfy present and future needs. Moreover, with an in-depth exploration of this topic, Sachs (2004) demonstrates a comprehensive definition of sustainable development as a science term and ethical norm that seeks to progress that is widespread, the elimination of poverty, social trust. In other words, this concept is requiring company to build a corporate sustainable awareness focusing on environmental, social and economical cooperation rather than stereotyped managerial approach with profit maximisation model only.
The basic advantage of sustainable management for resort is to build a sustainable business reputation and image, and thus increasing market influence. In essential, as the environmental awareness is an international theme, the action of sustainable management is complying with global trend for resort industry. On the one hand, it could gain stakeholders’ support who are interested in environmental sustainability when resort implements sustainable management. For example, government may provide financial supports to help resort construct sustainable development, such as equipment are offered by local government to reduce energy wastage. Moreover, (Noordzy, et. al., 2016, P.3 explores that it contributes to mitigating the risks associated with resource consumption to resorts, in terms of operational efficient and cost saving. Resort could educate employees to build an environmental attitude without waste. For instance, Hyatt resort designs Storage and Collection of Recyclables center to save wastes, and thus reducing the utility costs (HITS, 2009)
