Le Corbusier being one of the most important architects of the twentieth century, he is without doubt one of the greatest visionaries in urban planning. He designed many architectural projects which are considered avant-garde and ground-breaking at the time. He believed that “a house is a machine for living in” and envisioned prefabricated houses and others new modern models of living that affect greatly hereafter. In the following essay, we are going to discuss the evolution of architectural ideologies of Le Corbusier with references to the historical situations and cultural values at the time.
Le Corbusier was considered to be a radical supporter and chief leader of the modern architectural movement. (Kruft, 1994) Alongside with three other famous architects of the twentieth century Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Lloyd Wright, they and Le Corbusier are known as the main pioneering representatives of Modernist architecture as well as architecture in International style (Kruft, 1994). His ideas on urban planning and theories of Modernism architecture are even applicable to architecture nowadays, and indeed, he had have brought profound influence to the modern architectures up till present days. His building designs have had a high status in the history of the building, and the formation of the building concept has a great impact; however his ideas of building and construction were not immutable, we can see that after World War II, due to various reasons, the largest change has taken place in his architectural style.
All in all, Le Corbusier's achievements in modern architecture are enormous, he is a recognized successful architect, his success not only in his dedication to innovation, but also lies in his pioneering spirit, apparently in that era a lot of people criticized him, but He was still resilient and fighted the pressure in order to adhere to his own ideas. It is also an excellent architect and theorist who need to highlight who said “a curved street is a donkey track; a straight street, a road for men.” (Le Corbusier,1946)
